Eyes bore into me from every angle as my audience watches me trail behind Gran with Bluebell by my side. I veer between knowing I am The Merchant to knowing I am not. Each step brings a thousand flashes of knowledge and fresh awareness of what the role entails. The adversarial side of the role, the doom and death, war with the sanctuary, and compassion of the good.

Many previous Merchants have succumbed to the dark or surrendered to the light. However, this isn't an enlightened to higher plane of calling situation; it's giving the wrong artifact to the wrong person because you felt sorry for them. Either leaving a true Seeker without what they should be granted or allowing evil to be released to a greater evil.

All of which serves to confirm the one thing that is unequivocally and steadfastly at the center of my thoughts; there is no good choice.

Gran stops at the border of The Emporium and ushers people away. They suddenly become consumed with whatever store window they're in front of. Except for Draven standing on the other border with his arms crossed over his chest, fiercely watching and waiting. I'd dearly love a clue to what he's thinking or feeling, but his face is devoid of expression.

A need beyond me or my doubts and fears, even past my wish to find a future to claim, propels me on. I quash my nausea and ignore the hairs standing on end.

A blind panic that the door won't open cascades through me. I'm clueless if this is right for me, but I'm not ready to lose it.

I fight the light-headed anticipation of reaching for the handle with deep breaths that are far more ragged than I want. The smooth, icy-cold metal twists grudgingly in my grasp. The door creaks with an ominous warning, and I send the store a silent but heartfelt apology.

I miss the warmth and welcome from every other time I've been here. Even Percy stares indignantly down at me. I take cautious steps to the center and turn slowly around, examining every inch and item.

"You into second chances?" I sound out, pushing through an invisible barrier to get behind the counter and try to pick up the cloth I used to clean, but it refuses to move. I close my eyes and tune into The Emporium, forcing my way through its reluctance to let me in. "Yes, I scorned you, and I apologize. But I'm midlife and have been made to feel over the hill and unworthy. Which I might be."

A harshly chilling breeze bites over my skin as the store's rejection of that slays me. "Can we try again?"

The air warms, the cloth floats into my hand, and Percy winks. I grin, trying to hide how freaked out I still am that an image painted onto a thimble can move.

Draven is dragged inside, his head darting around as I'm about to ask when I get a team. Delly follows a few seconds after.

"Welcome to the team.
